The Ironman event not only benefits atheletes, but area organizations.  Friday, Bay Medical Center cut the ribbon on the “Lion’s Den.”

It’s a new interactive playroom which features games, web-chatting, and online fun so kids can take a break from their hospital routine.

A community fund from Ironman in partnership with the Companions for Courage Foundation made the room possible and with the help of technology, children can communicate with other kids from hostpitals across the country.

Donors say it’s part of the 10th Anniversary of Ironman Florida to help leave a lasting impact.

“This is a team effort in leaving a legacy long after we’re gone in helping kids,” said Companions in Courage founder Pat LaFontaine.

Ironman Florida Triathlon Preparations

The Florida Ironman compeition starts Saturday morning at 7 a.m and ends at midnight.

The race begins with a 2.4 mile swim at Boardwalk Beach Resort in Panama City Beach. Then the athletes continue the race with a 112 mile bike ride and finish with a 26.2 mile run.

This is the 10th year Panama City Beach has hosted the Ironman competition. Residents are encouraged to watch the event and cheer on its athletes.
