A lawsuit may put a temporary halt to efforts to dissolve the Town of Cedar Grove.
Last night, the Cedar Grove Commission approved an ordinance amending the town charter to make it possible for citizens to vote on whether or not to dissolve the city. A majority of residents would have to approve the dissolution in a special election.
The commission approved the ordinance by a vote of three to two. According to the ordinance, the special referendum must be held on September 30.
On Friday, a group called the Citizens Coalition to Preserve Cedar Grove filed for an injunction against the ordinance.
Florida law says a city can’t dissolve if it’s “substantially surrounded” by other cities. The group says the town is substantially surrounded and says the commission can’t prove otherwise.
The group wants the current Cedar Grove commissioners to keep the town operating until a judge can rule in the case.
