Bay County, Fla:
The new airport in West Bay is still months away from completion, but when it does open, it will have a new airline waiting to serve.
Southwest Airlines announced Wednesday it will begin flights from Northwest Florida-Panama City International Airport next year. The move is expected to bring in an additional 2,000 seats for passengers.
The crowd erupted, shaking Southwest Airline’s colors as the CEO of Southwest announced, via Skype, that his airline will be coming to the panhandle.
The vice president of the company laid out the details.
“By May 2010 you’ll see our canyon blue jets flying over your white sand beaches and crystal clear waters,” said VP Bob Montgomery,” We plan to bring 2 daily flights to 4 different destinations upon opening of the airport, which comes to 8 non-stop trips each day.”
The schedules and fairs will be announced in December, but State Representative Jimmy Patronis says the flight patterns give clues as to potential destinations. “When you look at the end point the number one destination that leaves from Panama City is the Washington D.C. area. It wouldn’t surprise me if Southwest considers Baltimore as an option.”
He also says Nashville is a strong possibility. Lt .Governor Jeff Kottkamp also came out for the big event.
“This opens up Northwest Florida to the rest of the world to come and see the beauty of this place. The things are when you come here the first time you automatically fall in love with it,” said Kottkamp.
Patronis says the dream that started back in 2001 is finally here. “It was still on a cocktail napkin at the time so we were selling them our dream…to see this come together… it’s the greatest bit of excitement I’ve seen in the history of the relationship with this airport. Maybe even bigger than the ground breaking.”
The construction is about 80% complete. The windows are in and the sheetrock is up. They say they are on schedule to open in May of 2010.
“A dream on a cocktail napkin” is what strikes me the most in this article.
