Tallahassee, Fla:

Florida’s economy may be in a prolonged slump, but that won’t stop Republican state representatives from holding a postelection retreat at a posh Panhandle resort.

Republicans in the Florida House plan to meet next week at WaterColor, a resort community on the Gulf of Mexico.

The resort is about 20 miles east of incoming House Speaker Ray Sansom’s hometown of Destin.

Package room rates range from $360 to $388 per night at the resort’s hotel, according to its Web site. Amenities include sugar white beaches, tennis, golf and a fitness center.

Sansom was asked why the GOP is meeting at such a fancy place.

When Sansom was pressed by a reporter on the appearance of holding the retreat at such a posh resort, he dismissed the question and moved on.

A spokeswoman for Sansom says she doesn’t know how much the Republican Party is paying for the retreat, but it’s less than what the party paid following the 2006 election.

House Democrats also will hold a retreat next Wednesday and Thursday. But they’ll meet in Tallahassee at their Capitol office and the Florida Education Association’s building just down the street. The Florida Democratic Party is footing the bill and has budgeted $5,000.

Florida Democratic Party spokesman Eric Jotkoff said his GOP counterparts are being irresponsible with their donors’ money.
