Walton County, Fla:

It’s been just two weeks since the elections, but legislators are already getting to work.  Republican House representatives pick a Panhandle resort for a 3-day retreat to get to know one another and talk about their strategies for building Florida’s economy.

“With new members coming into the legislative process this is an opportunity for them to get to know all the other members,” said Majority House Leader Adam Hasner, (R- District 87) “and certainly start to discuss the important challenges that we’re going to face in the next term.”

Of the 76 Republican house members, 21 are new this session.  They are encouraged to invite their children.

“We want the members and their families to know that we really are one family that we work together,” said Hasner.

The retreat consists largely of group discussions, presentations, and team-building.

“We’re going to be talking about strategies and ideas, different things that we can do in the Florida House of Representatives in order to help make Florida affordable again and get Florida’s economy back on the right track,” said Hasner.

Though the main topic is the suffering economy, the location could be considered costly.  Rooms at the resort range from $275 to $450 a night, and lunches up to $30 a person.

Speaker of the House Ray Sansom (R- District 4) says they plan and budget months in advance for the event.

“Watercolor is a great place,” he said, “it’s beautiful but this time of year it’s cold and there’s not a lot of people coming to visit Northwest Florida right now so we get a very good rate.”

He added the retreat is fully funded by the Republican Party of Florida, not tax dollars.

“The information that will come out of here the relationships are built, is worth a hundred times more than any money ever spent,” he said.

The retreat continues until Friday at noon.

The economy has definitely created financial chaos. It doesn’t matter if you’re an entrepreneur or a plumber; you are going to feel some of the economic tension one way or another. Even two major Detroit newspapers, The News and the Free Press, are in need of extra cash and have significantly cut back on their daily home delivery. Just like any other business, the newspaper industry is dependent on the economy and advertising dollars. However, we are all aware of the importance of newspapers. Therefore, there must be away to keep the industry above water.
