The reason liberty county is the liberty correctional institution and the Georgia pacific plant.
“It’s continuous steady employment. It’s not an up and down situation,” said Johnny Eubanks of the liberty county Chamber of Commerce.
He says it’s not just the 240 jobs the Georgia pacific plant offers; it’s the opportunities they supply.
“The multiplier extends far beyond that to what the spin off jobs are….they need mechanics to keep the equipment going, the need restaurants to cook hamburgers and catfish,” Eubanks said.
Its companies like Georgia pacific that helps Liberty County to have the highest per capita income in the area. Even though liberty is a small, rural county with a population of seven thousand, the industries are keeping annual salaries higher than those in surrounding counties.
“Most of us grew up hard…and if we find a good job we are anxious to keep it, to work hard and to see that not only keep our employment but the business here that is providing that employment. There’s a great deal of loyalty to the workforce in this county,” said Eubanks.
Their average per capita income is $33, 806. Eubanks also says that a wood fired electric generating plant is coming to the county soon.
