Local Youngster Entertains at PC Mardi Gras

The saints came marching into Panama City today to begin Bay County’s Mardi Gras season.

The krewes of St. Andrews and Massalina handed out beads to bystanders lining Harrison Avenue. And bands from Bay County schools entertained the crowd with jazzy tunes strait from the streets of the Big Easy.  The festivities continue on into the evening at McKenzie Park.

Of course there was food and music and crazy costumes, just like the real Mardi Gras. But one little guy and his trumpet put on quite a show.

Nathan Bosworth is no ordinary twelve year old. The Big Easy, or New Orleans, is famed for being the birthplace of jazz. Bosworth said visits to the city fostered his unique talent:  “Me and my dad, we go to New Orleans a lot and I just kind of caught it…” He caught the bug, that is, for playing the trumpet “…You know I really wanted one and I finally got one and learned how to play it. I worked really hard. I just figured if they can do it, then I’ll work really hard and I’ll try and do it.”

Saturday at the Mardi Gras celebration in McKenzie Park, Nathan plays for the crowd. Although it’s another opportunity for him to play for others, it’s beginning to pay off, literally. Bosworth says that it’s not easy being a trumpet player. It requires lots of practice “…do you practice every day? Oh yeah. It’s important practice.”

Saturday night he has his friends Curtis and Chris backing him up by providing percussion. They say it’s been a fun night.  Curtis Crutchfield says “…we just thought it would be a good idea to come to Mardis Gras and play music, so we just came and did it. Have y’all had fun? Definitely!”

Chris Glass admits that “…We thought it’d be a good idea to have fun and make people happy and have a good time!”

Bosworth says that this is the start of what he hopes is a long career:  “I’m gonna plan on playing until I’m like, 40…’til I retire!”

Nathan Bosworth wants to thank his band teacher at Bozeman…Mr. Peru, for helping to teach him how to play.
