Lynn Haven residents will see safer streets and better drainage as plans to improve ditches along 17th St. are officially underway.

Mayor Walter Kelley says the 12-foot deep ditches contributed to at least 2 car accidents during storms, and constant debris and backup prevents water from clearing the roads.

The city entered a $250 thousand dollar contract to have the ditches filled and use pipes for stormwater drainage.

Area residents say any improvement will make a big impact.

“They should’ve done it many years ago,” said Lynn Haven resident Marvin McCain, “and I’m glad to see it happening now because it’s a dangerous ditch.”

The new contract will not cover the entire project.  City officials say improvements will continue as funds become available, but they do not plan any fee or tax increases to pay for it.  They are using existing stormwater fees.
