It appears it’s becoming a popular thing to do.  Everyone wants a seat on the Airport Authority Board.

Lynn Haven says they too deserve a seat.

Wednesday morning, the city of Lynn Haven made it official.  They are proposing to the legislative delegation that they get some representation.

But some say it’s too late.

Walton County wants two seats, Panama City Beach wants a seat, and Panama City says they want to keep their two seats.

“It’s in unincorporated Bay County.  We can’t have a board that’s got Mexico Beach, Parker, Callaway, Springfield… It’s just too big it won’t work,” said Bay County Commissioner Mike Thomas.

But Lynn Haven’s commission thinks their reasons stand above the rest.  They say as the second largest city in Bay County, it should have priority.

“We’re located next to the airport.  It’s 11 miles up to the airport but I think there’s going to be a lot of economic development,” said Lynn Haven Mayor Walt Kelley.

Right now the airport board is made up of two Bay County members, two Panama City members, and one board appointed member.

The airport board wants to add two voting members from Walton County because they are contributing their tax dollars to the new airport.

Panama City beach also says they want a member because of the tax dollars they bring in.

This debate is nothing new.  In fact it’s been going on for several months; Bay County Commissioner Mike Thomas says they’ve jumped on the bandwagon too late.

“I think this is a little ridiculous to come this late.  Surely they watch the news or get a paper out there,” said Thomas.

Thomas says Lynn Haven doesn’t contribute much in tax dollars.

“I don’t know why their leadership thinks they should have a seat on there.  I think they pay like 8% to 10% of the ad valorem tax in Bay County,” said Thomas.

Although everybody wants a say, the final decision comes from the state legislature.

Lynn Haven:  Businesses popping up all over - yes. New places to eat and shop - yes. Residential flooding - yes. Appropriate infrastructure and planning - no. Increased water, sewer and garbage fees - yes. Be careful what you ask for.

lynn haven really lost out when they tried to take over southport. I really wish that they would have, we would have businesses popping up all over, new places to eat and shop. these places will come but just delayed. lynn haven should have a seat on the board, but not to be greedy. lynn haven will be effected by the airort and if they play their cards right, economicly, they could really grow.

I believe you are exactly correct wifeandmom.  Maybe next time we will elect officials we will trust and eliminate this issue.

I believe this is an issue of trust. The old guard has for a long time looked out for their own interests while leaving others to wait and wonder if their interests were protected or even addressed. I think that Lynn Haven and the beach and Walton county have legitimate interest in this matter. I think that a proper airport board should have included all affected areas from the beginning. I find it insulting to say that Lynn Haven shouldn’t have a say simply because they only pay a portion of the taxes. Didn’t we already fight the taxation without representation issue a few years ago??
