Think about the greatest winning streaks in basketball history.
You might think about UCLA winning 88 straight in the 70’s or UConn’s women’s current streak of 78 games.
How about an impressive 30-0 season?
That’s where the Lynn Haven Wildcats stand right now.
The Wildcat’s are an AAU 13-and-under Division-2 team, and they are the reigning state champions in that division.
This type of success is not a surprise to the Wildcats.
“I knew this team could be real good. We have some very talented players,” said 13-year-old Gabe Steele.
“They have so much confidence playing; they even tell me we aren’t going to lose. That’s the way they keep playing. They don’t ever give up,” said head coach Howard Steele.
The Wildcats won the 13 and under Division-2 state title last month after beating Kissimmee by two points in the championship game, along with the state title, the Wildcats won all six tournaments they entered this year.
The undefeated squad is heading to the AAU National Tournament in Memphis on June 27th.
They know the competition will be great, but they have just as much talent.
“I think there will be some competition at nationals but I think we will still come out on top,” said 13-year-old Jayvion Wilson.
“I expect us to do real good. I believe that we are probably going to win because we are that good,” said 13-year-old Destin Dunton.
They are good because of their team chemistry.
A lot of them have been playing together since they were ten or nine and under and they have been coming up with each other. They play together like they say, family. That’s the way we do it. They say we are one big family,” said Howard Steele.
We are actually really close. Some of us go to different schools. Some of us go to Jinks, Mowat; we have one that goes to Bay Haven. Even on middle school ball, we are just all together on the court,” said Dunton.
Regardless of how energetic these guys are, sometimes it’s hard to keep a 13-year-old focused!
“Some days you get in practice and I’ll say, ya’ll go home! Sometimes, that’s what happens. They can’t get focused all the time.
When game time comes, they are focused,” said Steele.
98 teams have registered for the 13 and under Division-2 National Tournament in Memphis.
