Bay County, Fla:
Panama City Police say the man charged with killing a Bay County motel clerk last year, has confessed to the crime.
Police say David Eric Merkel fled to Texas after being questioned by investigators about the murder of a night clerk at the Days Inn Bayside Motel last October. Authorities say Merkel assumed a new identity before being spotted and reported to Texas authorities. A Crimestoppers tip was called in after a Houston area news station aired a story about the murder.
Sgt. Jon Morris says Merkel confessed Tuesday night to robbing his former employer and killing J. Edward Bennett.
Morris says Merkel is now back in Bay County jail. He’s charged with murder, grand theft and unlawful flight to avoid prosecution.
Morris says more charges are pending on other crimes Merkel committed within 6 months of the homicide.
