At approximately 9:16 p.m. on July 11, 2009, officers of the DeFuniak Springs Police responded to a report of a traffic crash involving a motorcycle and a travel trailer being pulled by a truck.  The accident occurred when the driver of the truck and trailer, identified as Joshua K. Guidry, a 27 year old white male of Iowa, La. attempted to make a U-Turn from the North bound lane of US Highway 331 South into the South bound lane at a low area between two small rises in the roadway.

According to Guidry, he did not see anything coming when he initiated the turn.  Shortly thereafter Guidry heard and felt something hit the rear of his trailer and pulled over to a stop.  An independent witness stated that he saw the truck and trailer making the turn and immediately noticed a motorcycle also traveling South in the same lane of traffic.

The motorcycle, driven by William J. Holt, Jr. a 53 year old white male of DeFuniak Springs collided with the rear of the trailer ejecting him from the motorcycle.  The motorcycle continued under the travel trailer and became lodged under the frame and traveled another 20 to 30 feet before the truck could be stopped.  Holt was airlifted to Pensacola where he was listed in critical condition.  As of the release of this report, Holt is now listed in stable but critical condition and one of his legs was amputated above the knee.  Guidry was listed at fault for the accident for Failure to Yield Right of Way and for Turning Where Prohibited.

The DeFuniak Springs Police would like to remind all drivers to be defensive, safe operators of their vehicles.  Motorcycles are hard to see, especially at night or during periods of inclement weather.  Be safe, be courteous, and buckle up.
