Panama City, Fla:

Obesity is on the rise, and it can lead to other health problems like diabetes and heart disease. There are some tools to help those with morbid obesity, including Gastric Bypass surgery.

Debra Zahara is a Registered Nurse at Gulf Coast Medical Center. She had a Gastric Bypass procedure five years ago because her extra weight was interfering with her life.

“I had to do something because I had gotten large enough where I couldn’t breathe either, and I could hardly walk because of my knees,” Zahara explains. She lost more than 100 pounds after the surgery, but she says it’s a lifestyle change, and you have to follow doctor’s orders to stay healthy.

Gastric Bypass is a surgery that makes the stomach smaller and bypasses a significant portion of the small intestine to aid weight loss. Banding procedures can also be done, where a band is placed around the top part of the stomach to make a smaller pouch.

Mary Evans is a Bariatric Navigator at Gulf Coast Medical Center. She works with patients to help them prepare for these surgeries.

“If you can lose weight any other way by changing your diet or another method, do it. But if you’ve tried that, you’ve been unsuccessful, this is another option that gives people hope that they can finally get the weight off and have a better quality of lifestyle,” Evans says.

You are always advised to talk with your doctor about the best weight loss option for you.

DO NOT even think about doing this surgery. My wife had this done and it has pretty much ruined her/our life. She has had to have multiple surgeries to correct problems(obstructions, perforations) that stemmed from the original surgeries. But besides that she now has never ending digestion issues and malabsorption issues. I have heard of many people that have had this surgery and be just fine. But do you really want to chance being one of the unlucky ones. Don’t be fooled by the hype this is a major and dangerous surgery. The decision to have this done should not be taken lightly. Search out people on the web. There is no shortage of horror stories about this surgery on the internet just type “gastric bypass complications” on the Google search and see for yourself how many hits pop up. Avoid this at all cost.
