Panama City, Fla:
Aging is often associated with bone loss. Millions of Americans are affected by a disease known as osteoporosis. Osteoporosis is a condition in which a person loses bone mass. This can then lead to fractures. Those who suffer from osteoporosis know how painful it can be.
Dr. Ismail Zabih says a condition called osteopenia is a precursor to osteoporosis. If patients are treated in these early stages, it can make a big difference.
The FDA has now approved a medicine called Reclast for use in women with osteopenia. It helps these women increase bone mass. It’s given as an infusion at places like the Bay Medical Infusion Center. Doctors say it is give to patients once a year.
Reclast was previously used to treat postmenopausal osteoporosis, but it is now used as a preventative method as well. Dr. Zabih says adequate calcium and weight building exercises can also help with bone loss.
