Panama City, Fla:
As we age, we begin to lose lung function. Smokers are especially in danger of this. State of the art equipment is available in our area to test for respiratory problems.
Treating respiratory issues such as lung disease, shortness of breath, asthma and COPD can be difficult if a patient is not diagnosed properly. That’s why Dr. William Tony McKenzie at The Lung and Sleep Center in Panama City says they have cutting edge equipment such as the Pulmonary Function Test right in their office.
“What this machine allows us to do is by a relatively easy and quick test, we are able to differentiate various pulmonary disorders,” Dr. McKenzie explains.
For example, the test allows Dr. McKenzie to determine if the patient has a restrictive or obstructive problem. With a restrictive problem, patients can’t get air in because the lungs are too stiff. Obstructive problems make it difficult to get the air out. This is common in smokers and those with asthma.
Dr. McKenzie says “a lot of times we find that people are using medication that one many not help, two may be harmful, and three is just the wrong medication to use.”
Tests such as the Pulmonary Function Test help patients get the proper diagnosis, so they can be treated properly in return.
