From hurricanes to floods, we had some extreme weather in the Panhandle in 2008.
February brought flooding rains to the Panhandle. More than six inches of rain fell between February 21st and 22nd. The heavy rain flooded streets, homes and even damaged the Bay County Courhouse and Emergency Operations Center.
In August, Tropical Storm Fay had residents on edge. The storm brought devastating floods to our state and caused more than 10 deaths in Florida. The Panama City area was spared any major damage.
News 13 got an up close view of Hurricane Ike with the Hurricane Hunters. Titan 13 Meteorologist Jessica Foster went inside the eye of Ike less than 24 hours before the storm made landfall on the Texas coastline. What was amazing about this storm was its enormous size. During the flight, hurricane force winds extended more than 140 miles from the center of the storm.
In October, Meteorologist Justin Kiefer caught a waterspout on the News 13 tower cam as it headed toward Bay County. No one was hurt by the storm, but 30 homes were damaged in Bay County.
News 13 will continue to be on your side, notifying you of severe weather threats in 2009.
