Marianna, Fla:
Despite media reports that the program is shutting down, the UNICOR recycling program at the Federal Correctional Institution in Marianna will not be closing, according to a UNICOR representative in Washington, D.C.
A data processing unit of UNICOR’s services division — the smallest of three UNICOR operations in Marianna — will be shut down by the end of August, according to Julie Rozier, a public relations officer for the government-owned company.
The largest program — the recycling operation — as well as a second data processing services program, will remain in operation, Rozier said.
UNICOR employs federal prison inmates with the purpose of preventing recidivism and teaching inmates job skills.
Approximately 330 inmates currently work under the three programs. The downsizing will impact 25 inmates and one staff member at the Marianna prison, Rozier said.
In July, several news outlets, including the Associated Press, reported the recycling program would be closing.
According to the Associated Press, UNICOR’s closure of factory operations at 14 prisons and downsizing operations at four more is an effort to save about $16 million a year in operating costs, beginning in late 2010.
Federal Prison Industries Inc., or UNICOR, has lost $20 million year to date and has lost money the last seven months, the Associated Press reported.
