The Moving Wall, a half-size replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C., made its way to Panama City on Thursday. In a special ceremony on Sunday, many Panhandle residents took the opportunity to honor the 23 service members from Bay County who gave the ultimate sacrifice during the Vietnam War.
“I never thought how amazing it would be to look and see the many men and women who have died for us,” Ellen Smith said.
Smith made rubbings of her high school classmates names to send home to their parents.
“They were just out of high school and didn’t have a chance to live.”
The wall serves as a reminder of lives lost and freedoms gained, and also a history lesson for our young Americans.
“A lot of our young people today don’t even know what Vietnam was. They are clueless about Vietnam. It’s part of what makes their world today and will make their future for tomorrow. It’s something that’s very important that they need to know,” said Linda Blann.
Volunteers will be reading all the names from the wall from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. each day. Tomorrow morning at nine a sailor from the Naval Support Activity Panama City will receive a Purple Heart in a special ceremony at the wall. The closing ceremony is Tuesday at 6 p.m.
