Authorities release the name of a bicyclist killed in a collision with a bus last week.
Parker Police say Dennis Robert Scheibel was killed in the accident Thursday, January 22.
It happened at the intersection of Boat Race and 11th St, where a Bay County school bus traveling East hit Scheibel while he was trying to cross the road on his bicycle. Witnesses tell police he didn’t look behind him before pulling into the roadway.
Parker Police say Scheibel was transported from the scene with critical injuries, and died a short time later. Police say alcohol was not a factor.
Ken Phillips, Bay District Supervisor of Transportation, identifies the bus driver as Ethon Powers. Powers is described as a exceptional employee. He started as a part time employee in 2003, and has been full time for two years.
School Board Superintendent Bill Husfelt says Powers has never been a problem and is extremely remorseful. Powers has been assigned duties in the transportation department. He won’t be allowed to drive a bus again until he’s officially cleared of any wrongdoing in the case. Husfelt calls this a precautionary and safety measure.
Husfelt says there were four children on board the bus at the time of the accident. One was from Mosley High School, the other three from Rosenwald Middle. None of the students were injured during the incident. They were picked up by their parents and taken home. The district provided grief counselors at school Friday for those students involved.
