Don’t expect the Florida Highway Patrol to give you a break if you’re caught violating the state’s new primary seat belt enforcement law.

Beginning Tuesday, police will be able to stop and ticket drivers for failing to wear vehicle safety belts.

The new law will allow officers to stop and cite a motorist for not wearing a seat belt without observing another traffic violation.

Florida’s present law only authorizes police to ticket those drivers for a seat belt violation if they are stopped for another reason.

The Florida Highway Patrol is giving out informational brochures about the new law.

The FHP will also give out tickets to anyone caught not wearing a seat belt. Lt. Chris Miller says FHP has always had a zero tolerance policy for seat belt violators and troopers will not go easy on anyone who is caught not wearing a seat belt under the new law.

“We are gonna be passing out informational flyers at all of our public offices as well as our troopers are gonna be giving those out to the motoring public as well. So we’re trying to get out the message as much as we can leading up to that June 30th. deadline”

“We’ve always had a zero tolerance policy for some time and we’re gonna continue on with that. If we do stop you, you can expect a ticket, we won’t be giving any warnings.”

“This is an additional tool to make the roads safer and that’s what it’s about, it’s trying to keep the public safe out there and keep our roadways safe.”

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration estimates primary enforcement will prevent 142 fatalities in Florida each year.

Florida joins 26 states that already have laws for primary enforcement of safety belts.

Here is my comment on this. I drive a trans am and a Harley, why are they making you wear a seat belt but you are allowed to ride without a helmet that isn’t a law nor is wearing protective gear while riding they leave that a choice to do. but yet they MAKE me wear a seat belt how is this right? riding a bike is more dangerous then a car is

Gator, not only is this a revenue raising tactic by the state, but is also a law designed to save the insurance companies money. The insurance companies are always looking for ways to minimize the amount of payouts they have to make. Therefore, they have spent millions,if not billions,to get legislation like this passed. Look for more of this type of legislation in the future,as they only want to take money from their policy holders. Then, through extensive lobbying, they will very rarely pay anything to those same policy holders in response to an accident or catastrophe. Nice racket they have bought for themselves. We owe all this to “our” elected officials on both sides of the aisle. Have a nice day!!!

It will be interesting to see how the run school busses handle this,,I’m sure that the state will not allow 60 kids in a bus to go unrestrained.

I do believe this law should be enforced. Because if I smash into you, I do not want you to come flying into my windshield causing damage to my window. And its less work for the cleanup crew, lets not forget them.

its still my life if i decide not to wear one its my choice. much like when a hurricane comes and i decide to stay its my choice, im taking the responsibility of my own life, much like the people in lousiana did, they stayed they made a choice. and dont give me the they couldnt leave, “some” not all have depended on the govt for so long as a nanny, they wanted the govt to lead them by the hand out. the purpose, you as a american have choices and freedoms, this another way for the govt to take it away.

To army mom of one,
I’ll bet those parents had instructed her to wear her seatbelt and she did’nt. She might not have worn one if the seatbelt law was in effect also.
Maybe we can pass enough laws so that our children can only make good choices. Maybe that they must all make A’s on report cards or get fined. Wait a minute, if it is a law then it is not really a choice anymore. I believe that may be a loss of liberty, freedom of choice….

To Army mom of one,
Check your facts mam, the politician themselves said they passed it purely on the need of the state needing more revenue, whether anyone who does or does not wears seatbelts gets hurt or killed is not relavent, they passed it for the money. We do not need a government constantly telling us what we need to do to save us from ourselves, that should come under personal choice and freedom, I personally wear my seat belt, thats my choice, I dont need someone looking over my shoulder telling me I should, nor pulling me over and writing me a ticket in those rare cases when I forget to put it on. We have become a society that says we are no longer capable of using or not using our common sense, not as long as there is a Lawyer waiting on the road to sue someone for our own stupidity, and a court system that allows them to win at it, I personally would rather have freedom of choice over a Government that is going to watch every move I make, legistate it and penalized me.

To Scavenger,

You go tell my friend whose daughter was in a car and not wearing a seat belt when the car crashed and rolled on her after she was thrown out, that it’s just about money.

And who in this world should be on a motorcycle traveling 65 miles or more on a busy 4 lane with only shorts, tee shirt, and shoes????  Can we say “Russian Roulette”?

And now begins the taxation without representation, This has nothing to do with safety and everything to do with money, you have it, the state wants it, and so begins the socialist ideas, USA, may it rest in peace…

Most people that drives vehicles are over 21 years of age and they should be able to make their own mind up if they want to wear seats belts or not. Wearing seat belts dose not effect any other driver on the road, just the one not using them. This is only a way for the state of Florida to make some more money. Yes seat belts dose saves life’s.
