Tallahassee, Fla:
The election results are in and now a new class of state lawmakers heads to Tallahassee to try to make a difference.
Wednesday new members of the Florida Legislature were greeted with handshakes and hugs in the House chamber. It’s part of an orientation that teaches them such things as drafting and filing bills, and working on committees.
But they are also greeted by a financial mess.
Florida started the fiscal year with a $66 billion dollar budget and that was down six billion dollars from the previous year.
Now the current spending plan has a big hole in it and could run as much as $2 billion short.
New members say they are ready to tackle tough challenges like the out-of-whack budget.
Incoming House Speaker Ray Sansom told new members that they come to Tallahassee at one of the most challenging times in the state’s history and he urged them to approach the job with humility.
He also encouraged them not to get too comfortable in Tallahassee because staying connected with their constituents is most important.
