Walton County emergency officials report no major damage in Walton County during Tropical Storm Fay’s threat the region.  Emergency Response Division Director Ed Baltzley announced he is downgrading the Emergency Operations Center in DeFuniak Springs to a Level 3 activation at 11:00 a.m.  This means that emergency personnel will continue to monitor the remnants of the storm through any alerts provided by the county’s dispatch operations.

“We’re fortunate that our county did not suffer the immediate impact of Tropical Storm Fay as many other regions of Florida,” says Ed Baltzley.  “However, we must continue to stay focused on the flood conditions of areas north of our county in Alabama and Georgia.  Rivers and streams in our county now have a high potential of rising to significant levels in the coming days, and we will be monitoring this situation closely.”

Officials are closely monitoring the following rivers for potential flooding:

Choctawhatchee River at Bruce / Ebro,
Choctawhatchee River at Caryville,
Shoal River in Mossy Head.

Although the voluntary evacuation of RV Parks and Campgrounds is lifted, campers and park owners must remain aware of the high potential for flooding along all rivers and streams.

All Walton County public schools are scheduled to be open Monday, August 25, as normal.  Also, beach visitors may be interested in knowing that the beaches are open, but the water remains closed to swimmers as long as the double red flags fly.

Citizens and visitors interested in monitoring the river conditions in our area or in receiving more information on the impact of the remnants of Tropical Storm Fay can log on to www.co.walton.fl.us for further details.
