A proposed ordinance that is drawing controversy in Walton County has shifted focus. Last night’s commission meeting took what used to just be the noise ordinance in a bit of the different direction.
Now it doesn’t just deal with noise. It’s morphed into what commissioners are now calling the nuisance ordinance.
The argument continues between private residents in South Walton and those in the special events industry like wedding planners and caterers. Now the ordinance is dealing with not only restricting hours… under which special events can take place in residential areas… but also with homes or lots falling under disrepair.
The chamber of commerce has agreed to facilitate discussions between the residents and the wedding industry, but the actual language of the ordinance is still under debate.
Commissioner Sara Comander says the commission thought a nuisance ordinance would help deal with more issues and get more accomplished. She says all suggestions emailed to the Chamber of Commerce have been submitted to the legal council to be included in the ordinance draft.
We’ve turned this over to our legal department to bring us a draft, and I emphasize a draft. It’ll be a working document…that will incorporate those suggestions and ideas into that document. The commissioners will have a chance to look at it and then we will, of course, hold our own public hearings.
Any suggestions for the nuisance ordinance can be submitted to Dawn Moliterno at the Chamber of Commerce for consideration in the next draft.
