My suggestion for what it’s worth after 20+ years in the Florida tourism industry: Northwest Florida International. The major airports in Florida are usually named after a large, identifiable city, such as Tampa, Miami, Daytona, etc. The only international airport in Florida that designates its geographic location by the “whole region” is the one where I live, Southwest Florida International. It services Ft. Myers area and Naples area to the south, which encompasses more than one county. Noone outside of Florida identifies a vacation spot by county, so the county name needs to go bye-bye. Name it Northwest Florida International and take claim of the whole panhandle. If the primary goal is to market Panama City Beach as a tourism destination, then name it Panama City Beach International Airport or Panama City International Airport, even if it’s not in PC.

rtcook, I agree the name should change since it is no longer in Panama City.  But why would anyone in their right mind want to come to an area that has nothing but bars and concrete to offer?  We have nothing out there for families with kids to visit except one poor old tired water park.  Everything that has tried to come in has lost out to the good old boys, one in particular, because it would raise the pay scale and he’ll never allow that to happen.  So let them name it watever they want.  If people are dumb enough to pay the extra fees to use it instead of using Val P, then they deserve the shafting they get.  Oh, and before you say anything, I am a local and have been all my life.  I just think this was a stupid idea from the start and the voters tried to tell them.  If it goes belly up, who cares?

I would agree that the name needs to be changed. I work for an air charter operation on the current airport. It seems that INTERNATIONAL travelers don’t know that they are going to Panama City, Panama, in stead of Panama City, Fl. I know of at least 3 occasions where this has happened, and we were called to rescue the confused traveler. If we want international business we must have a name unique to us. Emerald Coast International Airport would work, but I feel it is to close to United Emirate, and really dose not describe where we are. I think Gulf Cost Internal Airport is the best suggestion so far. It is regional in nature, dose not exclude Alabama, Georgia, and Mississippi markets, while still telling the world where we are.

Oh Really, you and Scavenger hit it dead on.  And even if someone does come up with a new name, it still comes out that the Bay County Commission sold us out to St. Joe!  I wonder what kind of under the table money they made out of this when it was voted down and still was built?  So really, it should be named the “Voters Got Screwed International” or “We Got Sold Out International”.
