Panama City’s chief of police and five officers face a lawsuit for excessive force.  The federal lawsuit was filed in Panama City Thursday.

According to the complaint, officers assaulted, battered, and falsely imprisoned 64 year-old Robert King.

King says he was helping a 17 year-old girl who had been struck by a car.  When officers arrived, the complaint says the officers allegedly pushed King against his vehicle, then shot him with a taser weapon three times within 30 seconds.  The lawsuit says one of the shots was allegedly fired point blank into King’s neck.

The lawsuit also blames Chief John Van Etten for not properly training or supervising the officers’ performance.

The couple is asking the court for a jury trial and seeking monetary damages.
