“She’s a great competitor, hard worker. She brings both offense and defense to the game,” said Wewahitchka softball coach Coy Adkins.
Samantha Rich might leave Wewahitchka High School as the most decorated athlete in school history.
Rich has won the Dairy Farmer award for 2A softball player of the year two times.
She’s been tabbed first team 2A all-state three years running, and she is an ESPN 2008 second team All-American.
For the Wewa senior, leading the Gators to back-to-back 2A state titles might be her biggest accomplishment.
“A lot of wins, we’ve done a lot of things for a small school. It’s been a dream career. It’s been really good,” said Wewahitchka junior Samantha Rich.
Last season Rich hit 11 homeruns for the Gators, a single season school record.
She now has 26 career homeruns, which is also a school record.
“She gets out in the summer and sees where she is at on a national level. So many high school pitchers compare themselves to kids locally and you don’t really get a fare collegiate comparison that way. She’s always known where she is at on a national level since her freshman year,” said Adkins.
Samantha’s bat speaks for itself, but it’s her pitching that grabbed the attention of the college scouts.
Last season she posted a 20-2 record in the pitchers circle, most notably striking out 14 batters in the 2A state title game.
“I just go up there thinking that we’ve already won the game. I just go up there basically trying to get everyone out,” said Rich.
All of Rich’s hard work has paid off, still with her senior season left to be played; she has already signed a scholarship with Jacksonville State University of Alabama.
It’s all thanks to the number of hours she has put in as a Wewahitchka Gator.
“There is no other school I would have rather played for. We’ve had a lot of success here and we’re going to keep having success here,” Rich stated.
