More than 500 employees risk losing their jobs in later this week.
Smurfit Stone Container Corporation announced Friday, that it would be shutting the mill down. The “paper mill” is Bay County’s second largest manufacturer. Management at the local paper mill remains tight lipped, referring the media to Smurfit-Stone Headquarters in Chicago.
Mike Mullin, Director of Media Relations says the plant will be down 40 days. He calls it “market-related down time.” There is no set date for operations to resume.
The paper mill currently has more than 520 employees. Average pay is reportedly between $17-$19 an hour. Many of these employees are not talking on camera, in fear of retaliation and not getting their jobs back next year.
Mullin says the employees were told about the closings Friday, but some say they heard the news first on News 13 this weekend.
Smurfit Stone shares byproducts with neighboring Arizona Chemical. Arizona Executives say Smurfit’s closing will have very little impact on their business.
Smurfit-Stone is reportedly suspending plants in Montana and Canada. A Jacksonville Newspaper, the Florida Times Union, reports the closing of a Box Plant in Jacksonville. Smurfit-Stone claims it’s part of an ongoing plan to streamline the company’s operations while scaling down on assets.

Just look what happened here in Port St. Joe. The mill here just kicked their workers to the curb after years of hard work. Now I know it may be a little differant story there but it is still all the same. Mgt. takes care of them selves and the heck with the workers that make them look good. My thoughts and prayers go out to the hard working employees that may not have a Christmas because the Mgt does not care.
Read it again dog. There is nothing in my post backing world or free trade. Make of my words whatever you wish. My only concern is the middle class. Just ordinary working class people, that work hard, are paid too little and put away wet.And after all that we don’t even get a kiss.
OH YES, world trade? YOU CAN NOT HAVE WORLD TRADE OR FREE TRADE WITHOUT LOWERING THE STANDARD OF LIVING OF THE AMERICAN WORKER!! PUT AMERICA FIRST!
I am a retired union worker and am never amazed to find that mgt continues to disrespect it’s employees. Union workers are no different than anyone else, in that, they go to work to provide food, shelter, and clothing for their families. If they are lucky, they might even be able to send their children to college. These endeavors are impossible to achieve on non union pay. $7 an hr. just won’t get it done. Further, we as a nation, now find ourselves in a recession soon to be a depression. For the past 8 yrs, our govt has been taking from the middle class to give to the already wealthy. They told us it would create jobs and trickle back down to us. When it did trickle down it was in the form of lower paying jobs. Now we have many of us who are broke. Those of us who aren’t are afraid to spend on anything but necessities. This is a recipe for disaster. In the most recent recessions, the middle class spent the world out of this delimma. Not this time as there is no more middle class.
feel really bad for my extended union brothers, hope one day that the mgt rats will get what goes around! if it helps,i think we(Arizona chem) are looking for 4 people, the last four that got to the drug test level, 3 didnt show and the one that did failed? so i would guess they are still looking, sad to think that we are and have had problems finding someone clean???(again i think we still are, wouldnt hurt to check)good luck guys and gals
No supervisor called me to inform me anything. I see this on the news and in the paper and that is how they want to treat us? I guess I should expect it from a company who wants us to work 16 hours a day without a lunch break and take away holiday floaters. It does seem a little fishy that they want to shut down one day after we vote on this worthless union contract. But remember this is Smurfit-Stone’s “Mill Of The Year”. Have a steak dinner with that will you
I’m not sure where the mill spokesperson received his information that employees were told on Friday because I’m an employee and didn’t find out until the late Saturday night news! Why is the majority of the mill employees find this news that they will have no income in less than a week from the tv before the company? It’s convient also the mill decides to shut down the day after the new labor contract vote takes place, especially since the company was already trying to take away most of our benefits and was upset that noone wanted an unfair contract. Guess this is how the employees get repaid for making this mill the mill of the year 3 of the last 5 years.

It’s the same everywhere. Whether it is a union or non-union job doesn’t matter. Mgt. is going to use it’s employees until they are no longer convenient and then they will replace you with someone that will work for less. There is no loyalty showed the employee that has been doing the work while the bosses live high on the hog.
Somehow it always turns out to be the employee’s fault. Hopefully, the workers will wake up at some point and collectively say enough is enough. Until that time arrives to quote an old song, “there’s a monster on the loose, it’s got our heads into a noose, and it just sits there watching”.
