Parker residents may have to begin paying a fee to use their ball fields…but they also may have another place to play. Springfield and Callaway have facilities that Parker residents could use. Springfield’s ball field hasn’t been in use for the past year and they say they are willing to work with Parker residents to help out.
Residents of Parker are angry following the meeting earlier this week that revealed the city’s plans to charge $70 per field per game to use the fields. City council member George Nepereny says that it all boils down to the fact that the city of Parker is broke. He says the city spends more than $30,000 a year keeping up the ball fields and that some leagues using the field leave lights on and the concession stand in a mess.
Currently the Springfield baseball park is not in use and hasn’t been for over a year. Springfield officials are discussing striking a deal with Parker’s coaches and players to provide a place to play. Lee French is the director of Springfield’s parks and recreation and says that people underestimate the cost of maintaining these sports facilities.
