At the 18th Annual Southern Open Karate Championships in Phenix City, Alabama on October 4th, 6 Members of the Thunderbirds National Karate Team, training out of the Karate Training Centers brought home 12 trophies out of 12 events from this Open martial arts event.
Coach Martin said “I am really proud of the team members who went to and won at this event”
The Thunderbirds faced strong competition from nationally ranked NASKA and the AKL organizations, many members from these other teams like Elite, ProRank, Kick Team, Team ATL are paid professional sponsor’s. This might have been a smaller tournament but was full of talented competitors - thanks to Young S. Won the promoter.
Bringing home trophies:
Jared Moneyham. - 1st place sparring
Eric Moneyham - 1st place sparring
Matt Hunter - 1st place sparring. 1st place open forms, 2nd place weapons
John Hunter - 3rd place weapons, 3rd place forms, 3rd place sparring
Chris Johnson - 3rd place weapons, 3rd place forms, 2nd place sparring,
John Johnson - 1st place sparring.
Coach Martin concluded saying “We did very well in the fighting division, it shows how hard our kids work, I am anxious to see how they do at the Wide World of Sports Disney Festival at the end of the October”.
