Bay County, Fla:
Bay County is still working on a multi-million dollar permanent booming plan to block the St. Andrew Pass from heavy oil. The project is wrapping up.
Bay County public information officer Valerie Lovett says the last step is to install the gate doors that will let boats come in and out of the pass. The gate will be put in Monday.
Right now there is only a 400 foot opening in the pass. Boaters are being reminded the area is a no wake zone. Valerie Lovett is also urging people to be careful in the pass and around the project construction.
Testing will start on the new gate Monday. For now, the pass will stay open. However, the county is working on a schedule for when boats are allowed to come through it.
The “Multi-million dollar” fee on this “permanent” boom also covers removal of the system when the threat is gone…It is not permanent in the wiki definition sense. It will only be closed during flood tidal range,,and only when there is product at the pass trying to encroach on the bay.
Hopefully, and it’s my understanding, this is ‘permanent’ until the oil threat is gone(?). If forever, it won’t take long for the shipping industry to get fed up and take PC off the map which would directly affect jobs at the Port.
Permanent? As in forever? WMBB can you please clarify permanent? What is next, are they gonna have a toll fee for going in and out of the pass? I can just envision 500 boats sitting at the mouth of Grand lagoon on Labor Day waiting for the gate to open. Talking about turning Panama City Beach into a ghost town, that’ll do it.
