The beach meets Pier Park and hundreds of people are flowing to the party. With the help of the Panama City Beach Tourist Development Council Pier Park is throwing a beach blast.
A huge sandcastle drew a lot of attention, but so did the thousands of beach balls suspended in mid-air. The TDC says the fun afternoon is a thank-you to all who visit Bay County beaches.
On a muggy afternoon locals and visitors gather at Pier Park to listen to sounds of the beach. The Tourist Development Council and Convention and Visitor’s Bureau throw a bash with a special goal according to Susan Estler of the TDC/CVB “…certainly this year has been challenging with the oil in the gulf and we just want to do something to make sure everybody is having a great time…to do something extra for all of our visitors that come here.”
And what goes along with every beach?..beach balls and sand. Not only are hundreds of beach balls suspended in midair but an artist also sculpts a huge sandcastle to depict the summer tourist season.
Mark Flynn, the owner of Sand Odyssey sand sculpting says sand sculpting can be difficult “…the idea is to get the sand soaking wet but we have one water hose and sixty tons of sand, so we weren’t able to do that. So we had to wet down just portions of it.”
The sandcastle draws quite a crowd, with tourists stopping for pictures…just like Nashville residents Kelvin and Shalita Simmons. They’re here for a softball tournament “it’s a nice park. It’s a nice mall area. I like that. I’m really enjoying the sandcastle. That’s creative. But I also like the stage music. So that’s cool.
They say the beach bash is a perfect wrap to their rainy but relaxing trip to Panama City Beach “...we got to enjoy it, though. We’ll take rain over oil, so no oil. Come and visit Panama City Beach!”
but of course the most exciting part of the afternoon is when all those beach balls come tumbling down into the excited crowd…a beachy end to the Pier Park Beach Blast.
The Tourist Development Council and Convention and Visitor’s Bureau sponsored and put on the beach blast to promote the Summer of Fun campaign.

I didn’t attend but the looks of those beachballs suspended above the street makes me cringe with flashbacks of New Year’s Eve when the they malfunctioned and people got trampled. =/
