Pursuit of Beach Bank Robbers Ends on Hwy 231
In just over 20 minutes, Bay County Sheriff’s Office deputies began and ended the pursuit of two male suspects in the armed robbery of People’s First Bank at 9001 Front Beach Road.
At 11:20 this morning, two men entered People’s First Bank armed with a handgun. They robbed the bank and fled in what was described as a cream or yellow colored vehicle. Shortly after leaving the bank, in the area of Laird Avenue, the two men were spotted by a witness changing vehicles to a white truck. One of the suspects fired a handgun at the witness. At this point, a BCSO patrol car pulled up and the deputy was informed by the witness that the two men had just robbed a bank and were now driving a white truck.
BCSO deputies initiated a pursuit which led over the Hathaway Bridge. The suspects turned left onto Frankford Avenue. They then turned onto Hwy 390 and followed it through Lynn Haven to Hwy 231 where they turned north.
The Bay County Sheriff’s Office Air Unit was utilized to assist in the pursuit. Spike strips were attempted several times during the pursuit, but each time the suspects were able to avoid them.
At about 11:28 am, when the pursuit entered an area of Hwy 231 where there was no other traffic, a Pursuit Intervention Technique or PIT Maneuver was employed. The driver of the white truck lost control and crossed the southbound lanes of Hwy 231 and left the roadway, crashing into a power pole just south of Hwy 20.
One of the suspects exited the truck, the other had to be extracted. Both men have been taken to a local hospital. The suspects have not yet been identified. A handgun was found on one of the suspects and an undetermined amount of cash was discovered in the back seat of the truck.”
