A special ceremony today at the Panama City Rescue Mission honors homeless Veterans.
This is the fourth year the Rescue Mission recognizes those who returned to their homeland without a home. Nearly 200 people showed up for the event. Veterans were given red, white and blue ribbons. The ceremony honored POWs and MIAs with the playing of “Taps” on the trumpet and a flyover from the Tyndall Air Force base.
Tyndall representatives also served a free meal to the needy vets, who also received military style backpacks and bicycles. Rescue Mission Reverend Billy Fox says one in three men who visit the Rescue Mission are homeless Military Veterans.
“Post traumatic syndrome is very prevalent in these guys that show up here. They come back with a whole different idea than when they left to defend their country they came back with their spririts broken and it draws them into substance abuse alcohol abuse a lot of suffering that they go through.”
Later this month, the Rescue Mission will provide a Thanksgiving meal for the needy. Rev. Fox says they have half of the volunteers needed already, but are still looking for anyone willing to donate a turkey, food, or money to pay their expenses.
If you would like to make a donation or volunteer your time with the Panama City Rescue Mission, contact them at 769-0783.
