The Panama City Rescue Mission is in need of some help. They have until the end of the month to clear all the trash they collected from their Rescue Recycling project.
Today, the county decided to help out the Rescue Mission and take some of their trash to the incenerator free of charge. The Rescue Mission is holding on to their cardboard and aluminum can collections to try and sell later this month.
If you used the Rescue Mission to pick up your recyclables there are still some options to be eco-friendly. You can find places to drop off your recyclables, here
The only problem I have with the cancelation of the program is that not 6 weeks they were soliciting for donations from each household that participated, so I sent in my $20. Then pickup was changed from every week to every other week. I got a call saying my p/u days would be 12/12 and 12/26. So I sorted and rinsed and saved my items until the 26th and diligently carried it all out to the curb (at 8 months pregnant) but got no pickup. This was a week before the program was officially stopped. I called the following Monday and left a msg for the coordinator, but received no return call.
I feel that now that I’ve paid something to assist the program, there should be a little more accountability to the customers. Maybe the management team needs some additional training?
I did take my items to Pete Edwards Field recycling containers, but had to resort them. And those containers were jam packed. Guess I won’t do that again.
Sigh.
So how many hours have you donated this year to sorting nuthergatorfan. i know alot of their stories and most of them should begin with “I am addicted to….”. I will say that some are victim of circumstance but I find it EXTREMELY hard to believe all are poor lost souls that are victims of the mean old society. And jackipanamacity PLEASE enlighten me to the plight of these people.
Another reason to try to NOT judge the folks hanging out around the Rescue Mission is that none of us know why they are there. Each has their own story. We don’t know who is loitering, waiting for an interview, just left an interview and wondering what to do next, waiting for a trolley, taking a break, or any of a number of reasons to be standing there right when I drive by. As for the recycling project, who can you blame for economic conditions that drive the demand for even recycled goods? The Rescue Mission is willing to try to help these folks, and I will do whatever I can to support them in this effort.
Not all, but several of the residents of Panama City Rescue Mission have “WORKED” diligently to help with the sorting of the recyclables in exchange for extensions on their stay. If you knew some of the heartbreaking stories of some of those “people standing outside with their hands in their pockets” you wouldn’t be so quick to judge. None of us are exempt from being in that same position. “BUT FOR THE GRACE OF GOD GO I”
kinda agree with ssmith, maybe if they had to earn their stay it might help them get a job? our tax dollars helped fix up “old” downtown, but during the day and evening a trip up and down harrison you can see these people sitting, sleeping or whatever on almost every corner? i know i avoid shopping in this area because of them..i feel bad for these people, but i cant help feeling like they(most) have done it to themselves? give them a hand up not a hand out?
Anytime I see these articles asking for labor help for the Rescue Mission I get sick to my stomach. The Panama City Rescue Mission needs to put all those “residents” of their facility to WORK and have them fix the trash issue. Everyday anyone in the city can ride by and see several people standing around outside with their hands in their pockets. Make anyone staying in the place sort trash and maybe take at least a little pride in their free temporary home.

I cant believe people give away recycled material for nothing. Scrap Aluminum Cans put me thru college.
My family has had a recycle center in Freeport for the last 20 years.
We would be glad to recycle the CANS for the mission.
We recycle 15,000 pounds of Cans per week because we buy them from the public. This is not a charity. We PAY you to Recycle.
It blows my mind that people will just give it away?
We have been recycling aluminum, copper, brass, stainless steal, lead, and othe non-ferrous metals since 1989. We save 120,000 pounds of scrap metal from being buried in area landfils every week…and we pay people to recycle it!
Plus, our price policy is based on beating any price, quote, or bid you can find from any other scrap yard. You tell us the best price you could find at other yards…and we beat it…that simple. We will give the mission our BEST price for their CANS.
We are trying to help the environment, not get rich. So we pay better than anybody else
