When the economy takes a nose dive it affects people’s pockets. That causes a chain reaction all the way down the line, even to their animals.
Melanie Higdon, the owner of Hidden Springs Horse Rescue, says she gets calls every day from people looking for a place for abused and neglected horses. Right now she can’t take anymore in because she already has 28 rescue horses and several of her own.
“The feed bills are astronomical. Vet bills are extremely high. Farrier care is at least $250 a month,” Higdon said.
At Hidden Springs Horse Rescue the mission is to restore and heal abused horses back to their prior spirit and beauty; to give them a life their previous owners could not.
“A lot of people aren’t able to buy the hay and feed. The prices have gone so high that people are giving their horses away to find good homes to make sure they’re taken care of.”
Some of these horses have such extreme medical problems that they will never leave Hidden Springs Ranch, but many are looking to be adopted into loving homes. Higdon says she’s heard stories of owners leaving horses in the woods and hoping they’re found by someone who can take care of them. No matter how hard times get, she says that doesn’t have to happen.
“There are area horse organizations in almost every county. If you need help for your horse they’ll help you find a home for your horse. They’ll refer you to someone who can help you so you don’t have to take drastic measures. It’s just not necessary.”
Just like many other non-profit organizations, the ranch needs your help to be able to continue to provide these services. Melanie Higdon hopes to be able to take on more horses in need, but that will only become a reality with continued support from the community.
