Plans for a brand new marina are in the works for the Callaway Bayou, but it may not be welcome. Several residents on the waterfront were notified of the plans and now they’re preparing to fight.
“We moved here because of the beauty of it… we and many others in Bay County swim and boat in this bayou,” said Garth Granrud. He’s one of 23 residents who received letters earlier in the week, explaining plans for a marina large enough for 232 boats.
“If that many boats came in here, the wave action, the erosion on the beaches, the pollution mainly and we know that’s going to happen,” said Granrud. He and several other residents are organizing to form a petition.
“Our concerns are putting a very large commercial project like this in a very quiet and residential neighborhood is not in our best interest,” he said.
Developer HCI Marina LLC has put in a permit application to the Department of Environmental Protection, but may not here back for up to 6 months. News13 tried to reach representatives from the Kansas City, MO. company, but they were unavailable for comment.
Meanwhile, Granrud and his neighbors are hoping to change their mind.
“I don’t think it’s in the public interest,” said Granrud, “and I think it would be a bad bad move.”
County and city leaders have not yet received any applications from the developer.
Sounds like HCI Marina LLC has more money than sense. They should contact Century Boats about the REALITY of the economy. Very few boats are being sold right now, but plenty are being repossessed. Simply put, A BOAT IS A LUXURY ITEM. Will HCI Marina be providing the public with free boat slips? I think NOT. Someone is either living in fantasy land—or doing whatever necessary to get their hands on more of our waterfront property.
It’s all about greed folks, money talks. This is not a good area for a marina; look how close it will be to the east side of the bayou. This is at the mouth of the bayou too. It’s pure selfish greed by the land owners and developer or are they one in the same? While it may be good for jobs; it’s NOT good for the bayou or the homeowners who live there. Think of the mess, noise and errosion in this quite residential neighborhood. The traffic up and down Boatrace Road, the oil and gas spills, the trash that people leave to blow all over the water and the land on either side. You say yes, but you must not live close to this area. I’m sure there are other places on East Bay that would be better for this type of development.
Why is it that every piece of land that is pristine and beautiful has to be turned into some moneybag for a developer? Are there not already enough parcels of land in Bay County that need cleaning up and refurbishing? Look at the area around East Business 98 just past the Methodist church that is all but abandoned and was once a marina. Why not use it instead of destroying another of the last few remaining sources of beauty? But that might require a sense of intelligence and so far none of these developers have shown me anything but their greed and lack of concern for the local populace and their needs.
I can appreciate the plight of the 23 people, and their concerns over ‘losing their serenity’. But I can also appreciate the concerns of the rest of eastern Bay County, including those of us who, like me, also live on Callaway Bayou. Eastern Bay County is rapidly turning into a pocket of poverty…... a wasteland of burger joints and storage sheds. The proposed marina could and would give this area a much needed economic boost, both for local jobs as well as property values. Pollution, Beach Erosion, etc, etc are hypothetical arguments, at best. A new marina is but one way to boost the economic strength of the area. It would be a great start to reversing the downturn. It gets my vote….
