Walton County, Fla:
Some hope that the widening of Highway 331 will put a stop to car accidents on the busy road. A fatal car accident on Highway 331 Saturday reminds Walton county residents that it’s a dangerous road.
Now with all the traffic and congestion caused by the widening project some wonder whether or not it’s worth the trouble.
it was bumper to bumper from the foot of the Clyde wells bridge and spilling into Highway 98…and it’s all because of the widening project in the works by the Florida Department of Transportation. The project has continued on South Highway 331 for about a year now and is set for completion by April. Many businesses in the area have endured serious drops in commerce because of the traffic and construction. Some in the area, however say it hasn’t been as bad as expected. Mark Ewing is principal of South Walton High School that sits right on Highway 331. He says that the congestion has given little trouble and that the benefits that come from widening the highway are worth the traffic “…I think the widening without question is going to be an improvement in safety. It will certainly access our community in terms of hurricane evacuation…”
According to the Florida DOT, the agency plans to continue widening Highway 331 all the way to Highway 20. All they need is the money to do it.
