Bay County, Fla:

The school calendar may not be finalized for the upcoming year.  The school board also decided this afternoon to take the decision made at last week’s meeting back to the panel for discussion.

Business leaders from Bay County and representatives from the Panama City Beach Tourist Development Council and Chamber of Commerce were less than pleased with the decision to start the school year earlier… shortening the summer.  Many showed up to comment, including students, all of whom support the decision to end fall semester before Christmas break.  Business leaders want compromise.

School board members have not set a date to discuss the changes again.

How to save the school district idiots another easy $100,000 a year?
Start the kids after Labor Day, when you would save $100,000 on your September Electric Bill versus starting the kids in August, with probably the highest electric bill month of the year for everyone as the airconditioners are on full blast all of August. It does start cooling down more in September, especially at night. Less energy is used in September versus August. Audit every schools electric bill and take a look.

The school year is really messed up for kids now days. My entire student life was that school ended around mid June and you ALWAYS returned the Tuesday after Labor Day, the first monday in September. This was the schedule in the 50’s and 60’s, for the summer break and it was uniform, businesses as well as parents and schools could count on it, year after year after year. Life was planned around this yearly schedule that worked well for all. Now, it seems you can’t count on anything or anybody as they are all screwed up and don’t have a clue on how to manage, even a budget. Any idiot can raise taxes or tax rates or cut salaries and costs. It takes a REAL manager to find NEW revenue.
The teachers have had zero raises or cost of living adjustments for some time and the starting pay of $32,000 a year(about $20,000), after deductions, for having a 4 year degree and thousands in student loans to pay off over a 10 year or more period, is a complete JOKE. Some qualify for foodstamps.
