Springfield, Fla:
At approximately noon today, Springfield Police responded to a report of a residential burglary in progress in the 700 block of Helen Avenue. the reporting person, a neighbor to the victim, arrived home to see a black male crawling out of a window at his neighbors’ residence. The suspect was carrying several guns in his arms and he fled westward on 7th Street.
As a precaution, the School Resource Deputies at Rutherford High School and Everitt Middle Schools were notified, as was the principal at Springfield Elementary School. Mike Jones, the Bay District Schools Safety Officer, was also notified and the schools were locked down from approximately 12:30 until 1:15 p.m.
Responding officers established a perimeter and a K-9 unit was requested from the Bay County Sheriff’s Office. The K-9 and several BCSO deputies responded and the K-9 ran a circuitous track through the neighborhood and back onto Helen Avenue ending at another residence in the 700 block of Helen Avenue where officers made contact with a juvenile male who fit the description given by witnesses.
The juvenile was questioned and admitted to the burglary. He acknowledged he had h hidden two shotguns outside the victims residence and discarded a handgun along his escape route. He showed officers the general area and the stolen handgun along with two others of unknown origin, were recovered from a nearby ditch.
The juvenile male is being charged with one count of armed burglary and three counts of grand theft of firearms.
