A Franklin County bank is in ruins after a tractor trailer crashes into the building and catches fire.
The Florida Highway Patrol says it happened at the Apalachicola State Bank at the corner of Avenue E and Highway 98 in Apalachicola.
Troopers say the call came at 5:40 a.m. EST.
Authorities say the semi was going east on Highway 98 when it ran off the south shoulder of the road, over the sidewalk, and crashed into the northwest corner of the bank.
The truck burst into flames, catching the building on fire and causing the building to collapse on top of the truck.
The driver of the truck, 43 year-old Joseph Mixon of Apalachicola, was taken to Bay Medical Center with serious injuries.
The cause of the crash is under investigation. It’s not yet known if alcohol was a factor.
The Franklin County Sheriff’s Office, Apalachicola Police, State Fire Marshal’s Office, Weems Memorial Hospital EMS, Apalachicola Volunteer Fire Department, Eastpoint Volunteer Fire Department, St. George Island Fire Department, Carrabelle Fire Department, Apalachicola First Responders, Franklin County Emergency Management, and Harris Bros. Excavators assisted at the scene.
