Washington, DC:
Legislation Declares that Life Begins at Conception
WASHINGTON – In an attempt to protect the unborn by resolving the question of when life begins, U.S. Sens. Mel Martinez, R-Fla., Roger Wicker, R-Miss., Sam Brownback, R-Kan., Tom Coburn, R-Okla., Jim DeMint, R-S.C., Mike Enzi, R-Wyo., James Inhofe, R-Okla., John Thune, R-S.D., David Vitter, R-La., and George Voinovich, R-Ohio, have re-introduced the Life at Conception Act, legislation that declares that life begins at conception and the unborn to be “persons” under the 14th Amendment to the Constitution.
Sen. Mel Martinez said, “This effort is about fostering a culture of life, where every life is considered sacred, every child is celebrated, and life at all stages is given the dignity that it deserves.”
Sen. Roger Wicker, who also introduced the Life at Conception Act in the 110th Congress, said: “In Roe v. Wade the Supreme Court refused to define when life begins, thus delegating this determination to the legislative branch. This legislation clearly defines that life begins at the moment of conception, a belief that is commonly held by most Americans and is something science has long proven.”
Sen. Jim DeMint said, “We must defend innocent, unborn children and extend to them the same rights of ‘life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness’ enjoyed by every American, as set forth in the Declaration of Independence and protected by our Constitution.”
Sen. Jim Inhofe said, “Our government has both a moral and constitutional obligation to protect the sanctity of human life. With Democratic majorities in both chambers of Congress and a new Democratic President, we must fight twice as hard for the sanctity of life and promote our Life at Conception Act.”
Sen. John Thune said, “Unborn children, as distinct, unique human beings, are fully deserving of our society’s attention, provision, and care. I believe this amendment would take a strong step toward achieving this goal.”
Sen. David Vitter said, “As science continues to advance, the evidence that life begin at conception is becoming more and more irrefutable. This bill is critical to the fight to protect the culture of life, especially as we face an administration and new Congress that seems determined to advance the agenda of a practice that a great number of Americans find abhorrent.”
In its 1973 Roe v. Wade decision, the court acknowledged that “if this suggestion of personhood is established, the appellant’s case [i.e., “Roe”], of course, collapses, for the fetus’ right to life is then guaranteed specifically by the [14th] Amendment.”
gta383man: No one doubts that a 10-year old is alive, but have you ever heard of case in which parents are charged with 2nd degree murder because a child dies of cancer due to their smoking? The only way something like that would make it to court would be if the prosecutor was a nut who wanted the publicity and didn’t mind losing; such a charge would not make it past a grand jury. Granted, there are some like that, but they don’t stay in office long, and they have no real effect on the system.
It is interesting that no one has brought up what would happen to a woman who aborts a child trough negligence. Does this legislation criminalize women who drink smoke do drugs or do rigorous work that may result in a miscarriage. By the letter of this law you would think that we would have to press 2nd degree murder charges against every woman that has a miscarriage because of gross negligence or at a minimum manslaughter charges. Will this lead to consulting sessions for those who become pregnant so that they know things that they can no longer do due to the consequences of a miscarriage. Will that lead to having licenses to have kids. People should think things through three steps ahead instead of looking at their own ideological beliefs and cramming them down our separation of church and state throats.
Bacterial life is not human, but the life that begins when a human ovum is fertilized by a human sperm is hardly bacterial, is it?
And yes, in fact, faith-based charities do look after those who were born to irresponsible parents. Even to the extent that secular governments do, it is because they have been shaped by millenia of Christian, and (to a smaller extent, do to demographics) Jewish faith-based morality.
There is no proof we came from bacteria, the THEORY of evolution has never been proven.
There is a difference between life at conception and a baby. Bacteria are alive, viruses are alive. Life alone is not the necessary criteria. In fact we arose from bacteria. These men are attempting to throw their unscientific, biased and faith based nonsense on all. What lies they spout when they talk about the sanctity of all life - tell me they go out and help the impoverished and abused kids born because someone couldn’t get an abortion. Are they going to donate their share of water and food when the world’s resources are gone? Of course not. All men, all using power to declare life begins at conception. What about masturbation? Why not ban that since sperm are alive? These people need to stop pretending they are so knowledgeable and worry more about the sanctity of the children already here.
i totally agree. if anyone becomes pregnant, there is a reason. that is a life in there. if it is there, then God thought of that being. MADE THEM UP! why would He make a person without any intent for their life? He wouldnt.Everything has a purpose in Him, and just because you arent ready to have this child, God wants it here. So deal with it. =].. and its about time for us republicans to get a say in something….im still waiting for the presidential recount….
Wow, the conservatives of this party are starting to show leadership.

North Dakota steps into nation’s abortion-fight spotlight
By Doug Grow | Monday, March 9, 2009
Now it’s North Dakota’s turn to be at the center of the abortion battle.
The state received that distinction late last month, when its House of Representatives passed House Bill 1572, which defines every fertilized egg as a human being. The bill, only a couple of paragraphs long, is similar to a constitutional amendment that was crushed by Colorado voters last fall. Its fate now rests in the hands of a conservative Senate, where a majority of members oppose abortion…..(more).........
“The proposal could be more effective giving states back the right to decide the issue of abortion for themselves because it treats people equally,” he wrote. “If that happens, states would certainly have the ability to decide when they allow for life to be taken, just as they do now for the death penalty and assisted suicide.”
YES to LIFE!
