Is college spring break worth the money in marketing?  It’s a question Tourist Development Council (TDC) leaders have been asking for several years.  Now, they’re using facts and figures to find an answer.

“How do we take the emotion out of the decision-making process?” asked TDC director Dan Rowe.  That’s why the Y-Partnership agency conducted an independent survey of more than 1,000 visitors to find out their opinions on spring break.

The TDC spent $150 thousand to bring college students to the beach last year.  After the survey’s results, Rowe says they may pull funding completely.

“Panama City beach is a great beach, and I think that it will continue to attract a lot of college students as we go forward,” he said, “regardless if the TDC spends money attracting college kids.”

Numbers show 52% of drive-in visitors said they thought spring break made the beach a less attractive destination.  Overall, three times as many thought it was less appealing than those that thought spring break made the beach more appealing.

“The spring break perception that exists for Panama City Beach is clearly negative,” said Y Partnership representative Peter Yesovich.

“There’s good news and there’s bad news in the study that we did,” said Rowe.  He says it revealed a clean slate for those who fly to the destination, many of which had no opinion on spring break.

“I don’t know where the money will go,” he said, ‘but I think for the first time we will have more resources available to market Panama City Beach as a destination throughout the year.”

TDC leaders will host a community forum in the City Hall board room on August 19th at 9am before making their decision.

To slc: I can give you the route that we take but You’ll have to contact me at .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address). This site does not give enough space to give directions. The final destination would be Needles, Calif., but you could adjust as you saw fit.

to tweetybird:  I love your idea of driving and seeing the country with my family.  Do you have a good site for planning a good road trip.  We are considering two destinations, New York and California.  Where do I find a good ‘road trip’ planner?

Casinos are being approved right now, its just the normal typical precedures in doing so, first you have to legalize some sort of slots or video poker machines, which that has been approved. then the next step is bringing in casino ships, legalize casinos off land, wait for a hurricane to hit, and then legalize land base casinos.

however, by the time they bring in the ships, people would be flat broke, so they need to cut corners here, tax payers are not the concern, its how much money will the government get, the legally-screw-the-investors method.

but florida will be the biggest casino state in the nation by 2020.

so we need to legalize prostitution now, lower prison populations with public hanging fairs, with food, games, rides and live music (bring the whole family).

Vote out the good ole boys and do not patronize their businesses until they give the locals a break on the new Pier prices and put the season pass back for seniors at $10.00! That’s what it use to be! Not the $180.00 rip off for seniors!
Your days in office are numbered and I, for one, along with my neighbors and large family will not be patronizing any of your businesses, forever!
You’ve ripped us off for the last time and now you will not get anymore of our dollars as you are all GREEDY!
You know who you are and what you have done!

Oops! I’m bad. the website for the Hovver Dam By-Pass should be http://hooverdambypass.org. There are some interesting sites along Route 66 that I like as well. Give the local people something to be excited about and the tourists alike in order to get more families to stay here for vacation and it will help the job situation as well. Get some industry here. Start making things that Americans want to buy here at home instead of overseas.

All of ya’ll want to add casinos. That’s fine and good but has anyone looked at the rates for Las Vegas during this time of econmomic striff. I have. I get e-mails from Circus Circus all the time. Yesterday the e-mail showed rates during the week at $26.95/night with kids under 12 eat free at the buffet with each adult meal. Weekend rates run a little higher. I don’t fly but drive because it’s cheaper with kids and you get to see parts of this nation that you will not see flying. Check out the new Hoover Dam bridge at http://www.hoverdambypass.com.

rockinjoe,, you might have something there.. you say,“Legalize prostitution, casinos and have public hangings”. legalize prostitution, imagine the tax they could get off that?? have them tested every week for stds?? make them carry a license for thier"job”, state could be talking about some real money?? casinos, everyone wants… and public hangings, now thats the best of the 3, i really like that!! if you watch someones neck get stretched, then watch them take a dirt nap, next time some of these wanna be criminals decide to do something they will think about getting hung and decide its not the best of ideas..if it saves one life its worth it??right??

I’m all for public hangings! You could do it at the end of the new pier that charges locals $180.00 a year to take a walk!
The Panama City Beach Council and Mayor could put a new gallows at the end of the pier and probably even charge more money! Maybe they could get $10.00 admission? Or better yet, maybe the residents could build a long plank at the end of their goldmine pier and we could have them all WALK THE PLANK for not protecting our interests but again, ripping us all off at the expense of the tourists and their self interests!
Vote these scoundrels all of them, out of office at the next election! Do not forget, they are NOT your friends.

I have the answer to our tourist problems and ways of bringing in more residents.

Legalize prostitution, casinos and have public hangings.

Legalize career enforcement on our youth (our local government decides which careers our children will have by the age of 5).

One Child Per Parent law, if anymore, enforce abortion, or allow Baby Auctions.

And give law enforcement the right to not use force and just don’t even work, just sit there and watch people tailgating each other (oh wait we already have them, my bad).

I have been working at a family tourist based businesss for 11 years.  I have witnessed a steady decline in our business over the years.  The problem is spring break in PCB is a necessary evil.  These college kids that everyone complains about coming here support PCB economy at a time of the year when thier is little else to support it.  They bring jobs to the beach and money in local businesses pockets at a time of year when families are unable to vacation due to thier kids being in school. It’s just another example of PCB cutting it’s nose off to spite it’s face. What needs to happen is the city needs to spend that money on attracting factory and year round businesses to the beach I am all for that. But the good ole boys always seem to block that so they can keep the local job force at thier businesses for minimum pay. OF course, that’s just my opinion, take or leave it.

I think you all have good ideas,,,build casinos and theme parks will come also,,,but with the local and state minds we have running this state into the ground now they would screw it up just like they did with the condo bussiness,,,,one example is look at gambling in mississippi as compared to new orleans,,,orleans spent what they thought they would make in the first 5 years before they even broke ground on the casino,,,whereas miss put money into schools, police, fire, and other things that makes life better there for the people who live there,,,our officials will only line their personal pockets ,,,sorry but our public officials have never and will never do anything to make life better for the taxpayers who support their extravant lifestyles!!!!!

Casino gambling casinos are now very family friendly. In Las Vegas, the casinos are packed with nothing but families as the modren casinos have huge pools, on site cinemas, bowling, shops, arcades, camping facilities, ice skating rinks, multi restaurants and fast food outlets inside the casinos, circus acts, huge aquariams with shark shows, dolphin shows, and a multitude of family entertainment. That is why Las Vegas is and International destination with millions of visitors every year, no state income tax and modren new schools and yet they are in the middle of nothing but 1000 miles of desert with nothing else?
Casino Gambling Casinos are Florida’s answer that would turn Las Vegas back into a dust bowl as we have it all!
Build it and they will come!

Oust spring breakers and bring in gambling?  Doesn’t seem too family-friendly to me.  How about just bring in some entertainment facilities for families… race track/theme parks/theatres/aquariums/etc.  Sounds like the missing link is entertainment for FAMILIES.  When someone searches a condo for the week, the first thing they want to know (after price) is “what kind of entertainment will be there for our family?”  Answer as it exists? ...um… well… besides McDonald’s there’s… um… a skating rink and a bowling alley, some mini golf, maybe a zoo or so.  And, well Ripley’s but who can afford to take a family to that?

retired one, i agree, they need to legalize casinos here, also it would be good if there was something to do here, like a real waterpark(that wont charge you arm and leg), something on the professional level like wild adventures? sure would be nice. but the fat cats in tally or washington dont feel we are smart enough to tie our shoes, let alone decide whats best for florida,, vote them out starting with BOYD!!!

To get tourists here with full condos and hotels year round, you need to have state wide legalized casino gambling.
With Disneyworld, Universal, the beaches and weather, cruise ships, etc, Florida leaders need to vote in legalized casino gambling, state wide so casinos can be built in Orlando, Miami, Tampa,Jacksonville,Panama City Beach, Pensacola, and other cities to make Florida an international vacation destiniation and end the exodus of people going to the Bahamas,Bioxi,Las Vegas,Atlantic City, and other spots and capture this revenue!
You would see Florida, boom! Right now, they fly into Tampa or Miami, catch a 7 day cruise, come back, and immediatley fly back to Podunk Idaho.
If their were casinos, they would plan and stay a few more days and spend MORE money! We are losing this revenue, statewide and are not keeping hotels and condos full, year round!
This is common sense which our state leaders do not have! Instead, they continually do not have money for the schools!

Again, this is only about what is best for the “good old boy” network that exist in our community. Same as it is in every community, large or small. Last night behind the Summit @ 200 young people gathered til around 3 am. They came with their boom boxes, alchohol, and drugs. And left their trash on the beach. If this had been local citizens, they would,at the very least, have been dispersed. But the police were nowhere to be found. And the Summit security were just following their board of directors instructions. Therefore, the families that are visiting our beaches had their children exposed to this sanctioned “rave”. Cudos to all those among us that are responsible for providing a safe, wholesome environment that people from around the United States travel to visit. I am sure that a lasting impression has been made. However,I don’t think it was favorable to the family groups which we should be encouraging to come here. Have a nice day!!!
