Franklin County, Fla:

A piece of Panhandle history that crumbled into the Gulf of Mexico is reopened to the public, thanks to some dedicated volunteers.

The 153-year-old Cape St. George lighthouse toppled into the gulf and broke into pieces in 2005 after years erosion, but residents banded together to save it.

The lighthouse was rebuilt on St. George Island, and Saturday more than 700 people showed up for the preview opening.

Visitors could climb the wooden steps and walk into the lamp room at the top of the 74-foot lighthouse for free.

Starting Monday, you’ll have to pay an admission fee.
