Tallahassee, Fla:
A Florida man has won a state auction to buy one of the state’s executive planes and he got a great deal.
This 1985 Beechcraft King Air Turboprop goes to George Levin of Fort Lauderdale.
He submitted the high bid of $1.35 million. The plane was actually worth nearly $2 million, according to an estimate by state auditors.
The Florida Department of Management Services put the King Air 300 on the auction block to save the state money. The fleet of three planes was becoming increasingly expensive to maintain and was getting less use because of tight budgets, so the state decided to sell the oldest aircraft.
It had been on the ground a lot this year due to repairs. The 23-year-old aircraft was out of service about 60 days this year through mid-October.
The state also owns another turboprop and a Cessna jet. The jet was forced to make a precautionary emergency landing two weeks ago because of unusual noise, but subsequent tests did not find any safety problems.
Now the state’s Bureau of Aircraft Operations will operate two lanes to serve Floridas government leaders.
