Bay County, Fla:
New safety belt regulations could make seatbelt violations a primary offense. The proposed changes passed a Florida House Committee Wednesday. It means law enforcement could have the right to pull drivers over specifically for not wearing a seatbelt.
For some, it’s already second nature.
“I put my seat belt on before I even start the car up,” said one driver John Crubia.
Researchers say it could bring an additional $35.5 million in federal safety incentive funds to the state, and save more than $140 million in insurance and other health care costs. But some drivers say the cost of one life is enough.
“I had a brother and a sister killed both in car wrecks and that’s before they even had seat belts, so I believe in them,” said Bay County resident Dot Jones, “I see a lot of people not wearing them, especially young people and that scares me.”
“In my eyes that is a good thing,” said driver Philip Hall, “Because anybody the way some of these knuckle-heads drive today, anybody can get hurt. So, personally me I think it’s a good thing.”
Current laws already hold drivers accountable for buckling children, but some adults disagree with enforcement for themselves.
“I don’t think they should be able to do that,” said Michael Johnson, “If you don’t want to wear, you should be able to.”
The bill passed its first House committee with a vote of 18-2 and is moving to separate committees before consideration from the Florida legislature. If it does become a law, it will take effect July 1st.
The US has seriously depleted our rights because many of us won’t stand and fight for them. Seatbelts are something that should be a choice. The chances they can save you or kill you are the same 50/50. They take as many lives as they save in the end. So I feel they should be a choice. Also you have people who have been in automobile accidents and now have phobias of wearing them and some who have other phobias that could prevent them from wearing one. Also added to that you have more and more overweight americans and those belts only go so far. I say they should be something we can make our own choices for after all we are supposed to have the freedom to choose things for ourselves….aren’t we?????
This is the craziest place I have ever seen. You can ride on a motorcycle without a helmet, but it’s against the law to be encased in a big metal box without a seat belt. OOOOOKKKKKAAAAAAYYYYY!
Does this mean my insurance rates will drop? This is like the airbag scenario, if we put them in cars will be safer and insurance rates will drop. The reality is they went up due to the cost of replacing the bag. The govt. has enough of our money and shouldn’t be looking for ways to get deeper in our pockets. If Florida would shop businesses to bring to our communities instead of blowing sunshine…I mean selling sunshine, maybe the state wouldn’t be in this position to start with. Why dont we just apply this to tourist, then we could call it a road tax, and we could get the money from the Canadians, after all they’re are the reasons Bay County hasn’t let big industry in. Just a thought….....

There are 1000 reasons for not wearing a seatbelt and every one of them could kill you. Sometimes people have to be protected from their own stupidity. Seatbelts save lives.
