Some spring breakers are making their way to Panama City Beach for something a little different this year.
“Campus Crusaders for Christ” is having their annual conference. Students decided to spend a few days outside the conference packing meals for Haiti earthquake victims.
Thursday was their first big packing party for the meals they are sending off.
“It’s really exciting just to see this kick off, to see a bunch of people come together to be unified and what can come of that,” campus crusader Elizabeth Kinuman said. “So many hands people coming on and off the beach, and how that translates into thousands of bags.”
The goal is to get other spring breakers off the beaches and get them packing too.
“I’m here for spring break. I was just playing volleyball on the beach having a couple of beers and these people recruited me to come bag some food,” spring breaker Nate Schumaker said.
Crusaders managed to recruit about one third of the helping hands Thursday. An assembly line got the job done a lot faster.
The whole process is simple. The bagging starts with vegetable and vitamins that go into the bag. The bag moves over to be filled with soy and rice. The bag has to be weighed for shipping purposes. Coordinator Dave Michels says it has to be between 390 and 400 grams. Each bag can feed up to 7 adults or 10 children by mixing the contents with water.
“They’re getting a lot more than what most people get,” Michels said. “So, it’s a very nourishing meal.”
Thursday, the Campus Crusaders and spring breakers made over 20 thousand meals.
Over one thousand campus crusaders will show up next week to help the team their goal of one million meals.
Michels says the meals should be shipped to Haiti sometime within the next 6 to 8 weeks.

Haiti and New Orleans have one huge thing in common. Corrupt governments that had plenty of money to help their people and their economies but chose to steal it and left the people to suffer. Now we’ve had to bail both of them out again. I feel sorry for the people of Haiti but our own country is hurting right now and we have people walking the streets because of no jobs. We should be concentrating on helping our own first!
