In an effort to increase sea turtle public awareness, students from FSU and FAMU spoke with residents and visitors of Panama City Beach.

It’s part of a grassroots volunteer effort to “share the beach with sea turtles.” Students walked through Pier Park to talk to visitors about the importance of sharing the sand.

To remind beach-goers of their mission, they handed out promotional items. They also suggested tips such as do not shine lights on sea turtles, and stay off the dunes.

“People are accepting. I think they’re really going to take heed to what we say so, everything is hopefully looking pretty good for the sea turtles this year,” said volunteer Kevina Parker.

Students partnered with the Panama City Beach Convention and Visitors Bureau to launch their efforts. It is a community service project that is part of a weeklong campaign known as Leadershape.

Leadershape is a national program, offered through Florida State University, which strives to enable college students to lead with integrity.
