The first week of June marks the first week of the summer tourist season, but gas prices and rising costs aren’t taking a vacation. “Gas prices,” said one visitor from Tennessee Rick Moody, “we saw them up over 4 dollars all the way from Tennessee to Florida.”
Some say it means they had to plan well in advance for their trips.
“We’ve been saving for quite some time to come here,” said Tennessee visitor Jennifer Pearson.
That’s why beach business owners are holding a Summer White Sale to encourage visitors to continue their beach plans.
“With the economy the way it was headed we realized that we needed to really put some emergency measures in place to impact our summer season which is June and July,” said Panama City Beach Tourist Development Council chair Andy Phillips.
A website offers deals from over 50 participating businesses. Phillips says it’s working.
“People are actually looking through the website and spending some time on there,” he said, “we’ve had about 8 thousand coupons that have been downloaded from the various partners… everything from 25 percent off, free amenities, free golf.”
The site has seen 21 thousand hits so far. Visitors can print out coupons for deals at hotels and attractions. The most popular so far is for a scratch-off offer at Shipwreck Island, reaching 566 downloads.
“It really helps if you’ve got a family,” said Moody, “We’ve got 7 of us so it makes a big difference.”
“2 dollars off here 4 dollars off there,” said Pearson “so it adds up and it helps.”
The sale runs throughout the entire summer season until the end of August.
