Walton County, Fla:
DeFuniak Springs, FL (July 9, 2009) – Today, the U.S. Marshals Service along with the Walton County Sheriff’s Office announces a successful round-up of criminals known as “Operation Falcon”. It stands for federal and local Cops organized nationally.
The round-up combines the collective efforts of numerous law enforcement agencies, focusing on capturing individuals wanted on felony charges including sexual predators and fugitives wanted for violent crimes. During the month-long investigation, some 353 warrants were cleared in the Northern District of Florida which stretches from Pensacola to Gainesville.
More than two-dozen agencies including the Walton County Sheriff’s Office were involved in tracking down the suspects and making the arrests. One of those captured was Wendell Ray Hurley who was wanted by the Escambia County Sheriff’s Office on murder charges.
In addition, convicted sex offender Joseph Christian Fontana wanted on more than 100 sex crimes involving children was profiled on the network television show “America’s Most Wanted”. A tip funneled to the Santa Rosa County Sheriff’s Office led to Fontana being tracked down to a home in the Dominican Republic. He faces more than two-dozen sex charges against children in Santa Rosa County, and is also wanted in Okaloosa County for failure to register as a sex offender.
In Walton County, eight suspects were taken into custody on a host of unrelated charges. They include Brandon Perkins who is charged with fleeing and elude, resisting arrest without violence, and reckless driving.
In Pensacola this morning, U.S. Marshal Dennis Williamson said, “the cooperation and enthusiasm of law enforcement agencies in the Northern District of Florida has always been incredible, and that team effort helped make “Operation Falcon” an overwhelming success.”
