A 9-year-old boy in Miami-Dade County is Florida’s first death from swine flu.
State health officials are confirming the boy died of swine flu, but they’re not releasing any other details. A state health lab confirmed the boy’s death was related to swine flu on Monday night.
Health officials say Florida currently has 417 confirmed cases of swine flu, including 143 in Miami-Dade County. They say the disease has spread to all parts of the state.
A spokeswoman for the state Department of Health says Florida’s first swine flu death is not a reason for panic. Susan Smith says the state is prepared for the pandemic.
The World Health Organization officially declared swine flu a pandemic last week - the first since 1968.
They emphasize that pandemic means the virus is spreading across the world and does not mean the illness has become more severe.
The federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention report there have been 17,855 confirmed swine flu cases nationwide, including 45 deaths in 15 other states. New York has the most deaths with 13.
